- About
Undoubtedly one of the most iconic figures at Goldington Road, Gareth epitomised Bedford Blues and everything that makes the club so special.
He played 81 games for the Bedford Blues first team, plus countless others for the club’s Rams, Wanderers and Rovers sides – many of which he captained.
Still the record holder for most drop goals in a single season in the club’s illustrious history (12 in 1971-72), Gareth made his name as a fly-half, contributing close to 200 points.
He wore every single jersey in the backs division at some point during his time as a player, before hanging up his boots in 1988. He also represented Llanelli and London Welsh during his career.
Gareth’s legacy to Bedford Blues and the town is unquestionable, also visible in our Junior Blues set-up which is still going strong as English rugby’s third biggest mini junior section, over 50 years after Gareth and former teammates helped to lay the foundations for its creation.
Marie, Gareth's wife, his daughter, Lucy, and family have kindly chosen Bedford Blues Foundation as their charity and we are incredibly grateful for any donations received.
Gareth’s teaching career was focused on improving the lives of his pupils through sport. Bedford Blues Foundation uses the power of sport and rugby to change lives in Bedfordshire. Through different programmes, the Foundation uses Bedford Blues history to inspire young people, specifically children from challenging backgrounds. Rugby can be a powerful tool and a sport so important to developing teamwork, respect, sportsmanship and communication, the Foundation harnesses the sport for good.
